Lincoln School - The Building
Lincoln School is located at 1501 E. 6th Street in Sterling, Illinois. The current Lincoln Elementary School was built in 1952. The current building replaced the former Lincoln School, which was situated where our current playground sits (see next page for pictorial history). At the time the current Lincoln School was built, it was utilized as a neighborhood school primarily. Since the onset of attendance centers in the fall of 2003, Lincoln's student population has changed to include 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who live east of Locust Street and south of Lynn Boulevard and west of Freeport Road. Boundaries have been expanded to include children from the neighborhoods of Grimes, Emerson, Como, Indian Ridge, and Galt.
There have been recent updates to Lincoln School. The boiler was updated in summer of 2002 to include a new burner; the roof for portions of the building was changed out during the summer of 2004; and asbestos was removed from boiler room also in summer, 2004. In 2006, new outside security lights were installed. A security system was installed in 2007 to meet the District's expectations for the safety of students and staff. A Title I Room was added in 2008, by taking a portion of a 3rd Grade Classroom.
Lincoln School - The People
Formerly, Lincoln Elementary School was a K-6 building, but in the mid nineties with the adoption of a middle school philosophy at Challand Middle School , sixth grade students were moved from Lincoln to Challand. In 2003, with the District's move to attendance centers, Lincoln became a 3-5 building, as 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students from Lincoln and Jefferson Schools were combined to create the Lincoln School we have today.
